PHILLIPSBURG, N.J. – A pipeline replacement project by the Elizabethtown Gas company will necessitate overnight New Jersey-bound traffic detours at the Northampton Street Bridge – colloquially known as the Easton-Phillipsburg “free bridge” – starting Monday night, March 24, and continuing for up to one week.
An Elizabethtown Gas contractor – Skoda Construction – is scheduled to replace aging gas mains and connections at Main Street and Union Square on the Phillipsburg side of the bridge. The work activities are scheduled to be conducted 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. (next day) on weeknights. (Note: This is not a Delaware River Joint Toll Bridge Commission project.)
When gas-main replacement work takes place, New Jersey-bound traffic will be blocked from crossing the bridge at the Easton side. Affected motorists are advised to cross into Phillipsburg via the non-toll eastbound direction on the nearby Easton-Phillipsburg (Route 22) Toll Bridge.
Elizabethtown Gas and Skoda Construction are expected to stage their construction activities in a manner that would allow Pennsylvania-bound traffic to continue crossing the Northampton Street Bridge whenever overnight gas main replacement work takes place.
