DELAWARE WATER GAP, PA – Due to the forecast of heavy rains from Hurricane Ida’s storm remnants, Wednesday night’s lane shifting work at the Delaware Water Gap (I-80) Bridge’s toll plaza area has been postponed to Thursday night, the Delaware River Joint Toll Bridge Commission announced today.
Weather permitting, the lane-shift work between the bridge and toll area along I-80 westbound in Pennsylvania is rescheduled to begin 8 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 2, and end no later than 6 a.m. Friday, Sept. 3.
To enable work crews to execute the traffic shift realign concrete barriers, the toll plaza will operate through a portion of Thursday night with only two toll booth available for processing cash transactions. The adjoining Express E-ZPass facility will remain fully open during this transitional period.
When the traffic shift is completed, the two toll booths on the left side of the plaza will be barricaded to traffic. The three remaining toll booths on the right will be open to process both cash and E-ZPass transactions. This pattern is expected to remain in place into the fall.
The new toll plaza travel pattern will provide a safe area for construction crews to replace the failing concrete pavements in the area of the two left toll booths. (The concrete slabs for the other three toll collection lanes will have already been replaced.)
The work is part of the $3.8 million Delaware Water Gap Toll Bridge Facility Westbound Toll Plaza Roadway and New Jersey Approach Repairs Project, which began earlier this year. The roughly six-month-long project is addressing pavement deficiencies in the area of the Delaware Water Gap (I-80) Toll Bridge’s toll plaza area and along the bridge’s eastbound and westbound New Jersey approach roadways.
Note: The aforementioned travel restrictions are subject to change due to weather, emergencies, traffic, and equipment/materials mobilization. Motorists are urged to allow extra time to reach their destinations, reduce speeds and exercise caution when travelling through project work areas.
