EASTON, PA. – Another session of testing and troubleshooting work on the Northampton Street Toll-Supported Bridge’s recently installed programmable color-changing LED architectural lighting system is scheduled for approximately 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 27.
Lane closures are not expected to be needed.
The lighting system was installed as part of a comprehensive rehabilitation project at the bridge, which is colloquially referred to as the Easton-Phillipsburg “free bridge.” The project, which began in late 2021, is on the cusp of reaching final completion.
Technicians initiated efforts to fine-tune the computer-controlled system earlier this month. Those testing sessions generated a flurry of community social media posts on both sides of the river, with overwhelming numbers of area residents expressing enthusiastic and appreciative comments.
The 550-foot-long, 36-foot-wide bridge is the Commission’s busiest non-toll crossing. The bridge has a three-ton weight limit and a 15-mph speed limit. Bridge monitors are stationed at each end of the bridge on a 24/7 basis to prevent crossings of overweight vehicles.
