DELAWARE WATER GAP, PA – A series of overnight single-lane travel patterns are scheduled to be implemented next week along I-80 eastbound and westbound in the immediate vicinity of the Delaware Water Gap (I-80) Toll Bridge, the Delaware River Joint Toll Bridge Commission announced today.
Travel impacts should be minor as traffic volumes are low during overnight hours at the bridge. The travel restrictions are expected to be in place from 8 p.m. to 4 a.m. (next morning) on Monday, Sept. 13, through Thursday, Sept. 16. The taper for eastbound single-lane travel will begin on the bridge’s Pennsylvania side. The taper for westbound single-lane travel will begin roughly a half mile before the bridge in New Jersey.
The travel restrictions are needed to allow work crews to apply high-friction surface treatments (HFST) to the curvy half-mile-long section of I-80 that the Commission owns on the New Jersey side of the bridge. The application consists of a high-grade aggregate with a polymer binder. The treatment is intended to create increased pavement friction to improve vehicular control in both dry and wet conditions.
The work is part of the $3.8 million Delaware Water Gap Toll Bridge Facility Westbound Toll Plaza Roadway and New Jersey Approach Repairs Project, which began earlier this year. The roughly six-month-long project is addressing pavement deficiencies at the bridge’s toll plaza area and along the bridge’s eastbound and westbound New Jersey approach roadways.
