EWING, NJ – The closure of select exit and entry ramps at the I-295/NJ Route 29 interchange (Exit 76) on the New Jersey side of the Scudder Falls Bridge will continue without interruption next week with some motorists still adjusting to the new detours and travel patterns, the Delaware River Joint Toll Bridge Commission announced today.
The travel restrictions at the interchange went into effect last week and will remain in place for 18 consecutive weeks to allow for the construction of a roundabout on the upstream side of the I-295/Route 29 interchange. This will be the second roundabout at the interchange. Last year, a roundabout was constructed and put into service on the interchange’s downstream side. The two roundabouts are one facet of the 4-1/2-year-long Scudder Falls Bridge Replacement Project currently underway within a 4.4-mile-long construction zone at the New Jersey-Pennsylvania border.
Three traffic movements at the interchange are affected and each has its own detour route:
- I-295 EB/SB exit ramp to Route 29 NB (first exit in NJ after crossing Scudder Falls Bridge into New Jersey) – (CLICK HERE TO VIEW ORANGE DETOUR MAP)
- Route 29 SB&NB entry ramps to I-295 NB/WB and the Scudder Falls Bridge (Pennsylvania bound) – (CLICK HERE TO VIEW BLUE DETOUR MAP)
- I-295 NB exit ramp to Route 29 SB (last exit in NJ) — (CLICK HERE TO VIEW GREEN DETOUR MAP)
Important notes:
- Only select travel movements within the interchange are affected; the Scudder Falls Bridge, I-295 and Route 29 remain open to thru-traffic.
- I-295 SB (toward Princeton) entry ramp from Route 29 NB & SB remains open.
- I-295 NB exit ramp to Route 29 NB (last New Jersey exit before the bridge) remains open.
- I-295 EB/SB exit ramp to Route 29 SB (first New Jersey exit after crossing the bridge from Pennsylvania) remains open.
Guidance: Route 29 motorists seeking to access the Scudder Falls Bridge for crossings into Pennsylvania should follow detour signs for I-295 WB (I-295 NB in New Jersey becomes I-295 WB in Pennsylvania).
Because of the scope of ramp closures and detours at the interchange, motorists who use the I-295/Route 29 interchange during peak commuting periods are urged to allow extra time to reach their destinations as the public continues adjusts to the new travel restrictions.
