The Washington Crossing Bridge between Upper Makefield, PA. and Hopewell Township, PA reopened to traffic 3:25 pm Saturday, ending an emergency shutdown caused by a reckless motorist Saturday morning.
The motorist, driving a pickup truck, struck the bridge’s steel truss and three other vehicles, forcing a four-hour shutdown to vehicular traffic. The driver was taken into custody by Pennsylvania State Police after being subdued by Upper Makefield police using a taser.
The bridge was reopened after engineers from the Delaware River Joint Toll Bridge Commission assessed the extent of bridge damage Saturday afternoon and determined the structure was safe for vehicular travel. The bridge has three-ton weight limit.
